WHAT'S HAPPENING?!
First, I must apologize for being "MIA" for so long. I believe I just deleted a message from December of last year! Since then we have all been going through quite a bit: the pandemic, of course, economic shutdown, civil unrest, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and a contentious election season, to name a few. I hope you are hanging in there and finding some peace and solace in your lives.
Unfortunately many of our CERT programs have been put on hold because of the pandemic. No basic CERT classes or refreshers have been scheduled for many months. However, National CERT in conjunction with the University of Utah, Utah Division of Emergency Management, Cal OES and LISTOS have been developing a hybrid CERT program. The guidance is still being finalized. Hopefully we will be able to launch the program in the near future. It will consist of 12 hours of on-line classes and 16 hours of hands-on instruction. On-line learning will be at your own pace and you will be receiving a certificate for each module completed. Certificates will have to be presented prior to participating in any hands-on activities. I will keep you apprised of the program's progress and notify you of any scheduled Hybrid CERT classes.
Many CERT programs statewide have not been dormant and have actually been participating in various activities over the past few months. In Los Angeles County CERT programs in Antelope Valley, Claremont, Downey, Gardena, Long Beach, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Monrovia, Pasadena, and Whittier have participated in food distribution, welfare checks, rapid assessment clinics, assisting with an At-Risk Hotline, and social bridging projects. In Orange County CERT teams have assisted with face shield assembly, disaster ready-guide distribution, distribution of disposable face masks, and distribution of home earthquake fastening kits. Northern California programs have done much of the same.
There have been a number of changes at Area E Regional CERT. We will be reviewing the email list and purging non-active listings. That is quite a task that will take a bit of time. Eventually we will be back to scheduling classes and refreshers, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, take care and stay well.

Community education and self-reliance is paramount to the overall success of any City's ability to respond and recover effectively in time of crisis. With the goal of community readiness, Disaster Management Area E established the Regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program. The CERT program is about community readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where community members will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference.
The Area E CERT Regional program supports individual Area E Cities' CERT programs by hosting
Quarterly CERT Skill Module training refreshers, specialized skill training classes, an annual exercise, and special events specifically for Area E CERT groups at NO COST.
ADVANCED CERT (ACERT) *California Disaster Corps Eligibility
ACERT members participate as an organized volunteer emergency response team. ACERT supplements participating City's Emergency Response Team and City Emergency Services Agencies in times of disaster and / or emergency situations.
ACERT Members volunteer as Disaster Service Workers and agree to be available on a 24-hour call out list; agree to respond to a pre-established Emergency Response Area / Command Post when activated; assist City emergency response teams and emergency services agencies as directed; and participate in other city, county, and state emergency activations as representatives of the Area E Regional CERT Call-Out team. ACERT members participate in ongoing and expanded emergency response training.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the ACERT program and participating in the Area E Regional CERT Call-Out team, contact your assigned CERT Coordinator and ask them more about the ACERT program. ***Not all CERT groups participate in the ACERT program***
ACERT also provides members with eligibility to participate in the NEW *California Disaster Corps Program. Contact your ACERT team to learn more about Disaster Corps!
